Sentence Counter

Counts how many sentences a block of text contains, using terminal punctuation as the boundary. Useful when a brief specifies a number of sentences rather than words, and as a rough readability signal — a paragraph of two very long sentences usually wants breaking up.

About

What the Sentence Counter does

Sentence counting is genuinely ambiguous in English, so treat the number as a close estimate. Abbreviations, decimals and ellipses all contain full stops that do not end sentences.

How it works

Using the Sentence Counter

  1. 1Paste your text.
  2. 2The text is scanned for runs ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
  3. 3Each run counts as one sentence.
  4. 4Consecutive punctuation such as '?!' counts as a single boundary.
  5. 5The total is displayed instantly.
Use cases

What people use it for
