Does it cut in the middle of a word?

Yes — truncation is at an exact character count, so the last word may be cut part-way. For a meta description, trim back to the last full word by hand; a snippet ending mid-word looks careless in search results.

Does the ellipsis count toward the limit?

No. The ellipsis is added after cutting, so a 20-character limit produces 20 characters plus '...'. Set your limit three lower if you need the total to fit exactly.

What length should a meta description be?

Around 150-160 characters. Google truncates by pixel width rather than character count, so treat 155 as a safe target and put the important words first, since the end is what gets cut.

Can I truncate by words instead of characters?

Not directly. Truncate slightly long, then delete back to a word boundary — or use the Word & Character Counter to find the character position of the word you want to stop at.
