Tone Generator
Generates a pure sine wave tone at a frequency you choose. A sine wave is the simplest possible waveform — a single frequency with no harmonics — which makes it the right signal for testing audio equipment and hearing.

About
What the Tone Generator does
Human hearing nominally spans 20Hz to 20kHz, but the upper limit falls steadily with age. Most adults over forty cannot hear much above 15kHz, and this is one of the few things you can test yourself in a few seconds.
How it works
Using the Tone Generator
- 1Set the frequency in hertz.
- 2Set the volume — start low.
- 3The tone is synthesised in your browser using the Web Audio API.
- 4Play and adjust the frequency while listening.
- 5Stop when finished.
Use cases
What people use it for
- Testing the frequency response of speakers or headphones
- Checking the upper limit of your hearing
- Finding a room resonance or rattle
- Providing a reference pitch for tuning
